Physical Therapy for Runners
Physical Therapy for Running Injuries
Running injuries are often caused by a combination of training load, strength deficits, mobility restrictions, tissue sensitivity, and movement mechanics. Instead of only treating the painful area, we look at how your entire body contributes to your running pattern.
At Glackin Physiotherapy, your session is spent one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. This allows us to assess your symptoms, understand your training history, and build a treatment plan specific to your body, your goals, and your current running demands.
Common Running Injuries We Treat
Physical therapy can help runners dealing with:
- Runner’s knee
- Patellofemoral pain
- IT band syndrome
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Plantar fasciitis
- Shin splints
- Hip pain
- Hamstring strains
- Calf strains
- Ankle pain
- Foot pain
- Low back pain with running
- Tendonitis and overuse injuries
- Pain when increasing mileage or speed work
If your pain shows up during a run, after a run, or when trying to increase training intensity, physical therapy can help determine what is contributing to the problem.
Run Faster, Run Longer, Run Without Injury
Running places repeated stress on the body, and even small movement limitations can lead to pain, compensation, or recurring injury. At Glackin Physiotherapy, we provide one-on-one physical therapy for runners who want to recover from injury, improve strength, and return to running with confidence.
Whether you are training for your first 5K, building mileage, returning after an injury, or competing at a higher level, our goal is to identify the root cause of your symptoms and create a plan that supports your running goals.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Physical Therapy for Runners
At Glackin Physiotherapy, Physical therapy for runners includes a sensor-based gait analysis, strength testing, mobility assessment, manual therapy, running-specific exercises, return-to-running planning, and education on training load. The goal is to treat the current injury while also addressing the factors that may have contributed to it.
Yes. Runner’s knee, also known as patellofemoral pain, often responds well to physical therapy. Treatment may focus on hip strength, quad strength, foot and ankle mechanics, mobility, training load, and gradual return to running. We also include more hands on techniques to treat runners, which may include dry needling, cupping, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, and joint mobilizations.
Many runners can continue running with modifications. Our physical therapist, Dr. Annie, may adjust your mileage, pace, frequency, terrain, or workouts based on your symptoms and stage of recovery, but will rarely recommend stopping your runs altogether.
You should consider seeing a physical therapist if pain is limiting your runs, changing your stride, worsening with mileage, or not improving with rest. You should also seek help if the same injury keeps returning.
Yes. Physical therapy can help beginner runners, recreational runners, marathoners, competitive athletes, and runners returning after time away from training.
